"Can he who was dead, to whom We gave life, and a light whereby he can walk amongst men, be like him who is in the depths of darkness, from which he can never come out?" — Holy Qur'an 6:122

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad. On the most auspicious occasion of 73rd birthday of our beloved NOOR Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazar Imam (a.s.), let us first reflect on the following ayat from Surah Yasin:

"Verily We, (and) We (alone) give life unto the dead, and We write down what they have sent before them and (even) their footprints (which they leave behind them): And everything have We confirmed into a *Manifesting Imam (Guide)."
(Holy Qur'an Surah Yasin:12, S.V. Mir Ahmed Ali's translation)

*Said the Holy Prophet: "He who died while he recognized not the Imam of the Age, certainly died he the death of ignorance." (Note from Holy Qur'an, S.V. Mir Ahmed Ali's translation, p.1318)

Let us now reflect upon the concept of Panj Tan Pak which is captured on a beautiful card prepared by Maroom Alwaez Rai Amiraly Amlani (may his soul rest in eternal peace, ameen):

In view of the above knowledge, let us offer gratitude for being continually guided by Light of Imamat and reflect upon Mowla's immense favours upon us for the past 52 years, i.e., from 1957 to the present. In one of the Salgirah cards sent to me by one of my readers, a question was asked: "What birthday present can we give our Imam"? I will try to answer this question in this posting.

Part 1: What is the purpose of our existence?

Now let us read Rumi's perspective on this topic:

"Without doubt man is compounded of a body that is base, base, base; and a spirit that is noble, noble, noble. God the Exalted brought these two together through His perfect Power. A hundred thousand wisdoms are manifested from that noble spirit, and a hundred thousand darknesses from this gross body. That is why God said to the angels, "See, I am creating a mortal of clay. When I have shaped him and breathed My Spirit into him, fall you down, prostrating yourselves to him (Holy Quran 38:72-3)". He connected the body to dark clay and the spirit to the breath of His own Spirit, so that the light and divine Breath would make this dark clay its instrument for righteousness, justice, and guarding God's Trust; so that it might be a means of salavation, elevation, and high degrees. The purpose was not that the dark clay, through its greed for the light of "I have breathed My spirit into him", should make the lamp its instrument for treachery and theft. When a thief comes with a lamp, he takes the better goods.

On the contrary, the lamp and candle of Breath-Spirit should illuminate the clay of the body with light of religion and hold it back from its greed for clay, ignorance and heaviness. "So he whose intellect dominates his sensuality is higher than the angels, and he whose sensuality dominates his intellect is lower than the beasts." (Maktûbât 95: 99/189-190)"

Part 2: What are the Three Broad Objectives of NOOR Mowlana Hazar Imam?

Noor Mowlana Hazar Imam has articulated three groups of Jamati activities that can give him real happiness on his birthday. These are:

  1. Unity in the Jamat;
  2. Regularity in Jamati work; and
  3. Living according the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim tradition.

Over the past 52 years, Noor Mowlana Hazar Imam has emphasized the balance between Din and Duniya, the balance between body, soul and (higher) intellect, and in the Golden Jubilee raised the bar through the following prayer: "And I pray that you may live in peace with spiritual enlightenment to guide you." In order to address the three broad objectives, we now have to weigh everything with the scale of higher spiritual enlightenment.

Part 3: What Should We Do To Meet the Three Broad Objectives of NOOR Mowlana Hazar Imam?

There are numerous activities that one can perform to meet the three broad objectives and some of the most important ones are captured in the following wish list.

    • be patient, humble, grateful and authentic; and

    • be united at the level of our families, our Jamats and the global Jamat.

  2. Ya Mowla, bestow luminous (noorani), spiritual (ruhani) and material (jismani) barakat and tayid (help) upon us;

  3. Ya Mowla, grant salvation to all departed souls;
