Noor Mowlana Hazar Imam's Birthday:
A Time to Reflect the Concept of Light upon Light

Saligrah Mubarak! Alwaez Rai Amiraly Amlani has once again graciously prepared a festival card for this occasion. Please reflect the phrase 'Light upon Light' in the verse from Surah Noor (Holy Quran 24:35) and ask the question why did God gave an example of a lamp and not of a star or the sun?

I will attempt to answer the question as follows:

The light of God can be understood from different perspectives. From an internal (esoteric) perspective, there is only ONE Light. Therefore, the light of God, the light of Holy Prophet, the light of Holy Imam and the light of spiritually advanced believers is one and the same light. From an external (exoteric) perspective, the light is transferred from one personality into another. This is the explanation of the concept of 'Light upon Light'. The light of the present, living Imam reaches the succeeding Imam, just as one lamp is lit from other lamp. Therefore, the relation of one Imam to another Imam is such that their light in one and the same.

So why is the analogy of lamp used in this ayat? Esoterically, the Light of the God is fully manifest in the Holy Imam. Exoterically, the Holy Imams need to renew their physical bodies. In order to capture this concept, a similitude of the lamp has been used. Thus, the Eternal Light of Ali, arises again and again in each Holy Imam. NOOR Mowlana Hazar Imam is the bearer of the Light of God and this is the reason we celebrate his birthday (Salgirah) and the day when he ascended to the Masnat of Imamat (Imamat Day).

Let us offer gratitude and a humble prostration to the present and living Holy Imam, and increase our faith and conviction to follow his guidance.

May Saligrah of the Holy Imam bring peace, light, barakat and tayid to you, your family, your Jamat, the global Jamat and humanity at large. Ameen.

Peace, light, barakat, tayid, and didar,
Noorallah Juma
