:: Candle Post #85 :: Our Responsibilities Towards NOOR Mowlana Hazar Imam ::

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

Ya Ali Madad. On the auspicious occasion of Imamat Day 2010, please accept our heartfelt felicitations. May the peace and baraka of NOOR Mowlana Hazar Imam be on you, your family, your Jamat and the Worldwide Jamat. May Mowla bless all of us with Noorani Didar in our foreheads! Ameen.

On the joyous occasion of Imamat Day, let us reflect deeply on a couple of articles from the Preamble of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim Constitution and remind ourselves of the tremendous responsibilities that we have undertaken.

Part 1: The Article on Bayah

(D) The authority of the Imam in Ismaili Tariqah is testified by Bayah by the murid to the Imam which is an act of acceptance by the murid of the permanent spiritual bond between the Imam and the murid. This allegiance unites all Ismaili Muslims worldwide in their loyalty, devotion and obedience to the Imam within the Islamic concept of universal brotherhood. It is distinct from the allegiance of the individual murid to his land of abode.

The three key responsibilities are loyalty, devotion and obedience to Noor Mowlana Shah Karim Al-Hussaini Hazar Imam. The word "Noor" means the exalted Imam is "the bearer of the Light of God"; "Mawlana" means "Our Lord"; "Shah" means "The spiritual king"; "Karim" means "The bountiful one"; "Al-Hussaini" means "the progeny of Imam Hussain (a.s.)"; and "Hazar Imam" means "Present and Living Imam". With this knowledge, let us recite with conviction the Kalima and the affirmation of the continuation of Imamat which appears towards the end of the second part of the Holy Dua:

"La ilaha illallah,
Muhammadur-Rasoolullah,
Aliyyun Ameerul-mu'mineena 'Aliyyullah.
Mawlana Shah Karimul Hussaini Al-Imamul Hazarul Maujood."

"There is no deity except Allah,
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,
Aly — the master of believers is from Allah.
Our Lord Shah Karim al-Hussaini is our present living Imam."

Part 2: The Article on Tâlim

(F) Historically and in accordance with Ismaili tradition, the Imam of the time is concerned with spiritual advancement as well as the improvement of the quality of life of his murids. The Imam's Tâlim lights the murids' path to spiritual enlightenment and vision. In temporal matters, the Imam guides the murids, and motivates them to develop their potential.

Let us now think about spiritual enlightenment and vision. What is needed to achieve this? A concise answer is as follows:

Let us practise our faith with conviction and start attending Jamat Khana regularly, submitting dasond in full and on time, saying three Duas on time, practising bandagi because it key to spiritual enlightenment and vision, reciting angelic salwats, performing abundant dhikr, performing volunteer service and balancing din & duniya. All these activities need to be performed simultaneously to strengthen the material, spiritual and luminous dimensions of our personal worlds.

The Imamat Day is an occasion of great celebration but it also is a milestone which marks our achievements over the past year and our goals for the next year. Let our focus on the following themes for the next year:

  1. Loyalty, devotion and obedience towards Noor Mowlana Hazar Imam;
  2. Spiritual enlightenment and vision so that we may become his real spiritual and luminous children; and
  3. Balance din and duniya so that we do not get overrun by material activities.

Part 3: Recitation of Angelic Salwat
