Holy Ramadan - Holy Ginan Postings
(Project Duration: 30-days from October 15 to November 13, 2004)

Postings for Days 11 to 20

Date: Oct. 25, 2004
Subject: Posting 11: Holy Ramadan - Holy Ginan Project

The 11th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Monday evening, October 25, 2004. On this aupicious night, let us supplicate with a couple of verses of ginan, read an excerpt from supplications of Amir al-mu'minin, Hazrat NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) and then perform zikr for forgiveness of our sins and upliftment of soul by reciting the four phrases which praise Allah, as prescribed by our Holy Prophet.

In Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi, Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Mustansir bi'l-laah II (a.s.) teaches us how to be near the Throne of the Lord (Source: page 36 of the text Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi translated by W. Ivanow, The Ismaili Society Series A No. 6):

"Therefore, O, believers, the matters of the hereafter are settled in this world, whether they are to be good or bad. Therefore let your hearts be pure and united in this world, be united in your hearts with each other so that tomorrow at the Resurrection, in the presence filled with pure light of the Imam of the time, the absolute Lord, you may occupy a place near the throne of the Lord uniting with one another, filled with perfect joy and happiness. "

How can we occupy a place near the throne of the Lord? In his ginan Aavine besone gothadi kariye, Pir Ali Akbar Beg's guidance is to practise meditation, observe religious vows, and reflect on the eternal truths which are in the ginans. All these will lead to the experience of being in the immortal abode of paradise. In our faith, this is possible and our great Pirs experienced paradise while being physically alive on this earth. The experience to be be near the throne and under the umbrella of the pure light of the Holy Imam should be the ultimate goal of one's physical existence.

Eji Jap tap nem dharam jo karsho
To eņi karani-e vira paar utarsho

O Brother If you perform meditation, abstinence and observe the religious
vows with correct intentions, then brothers, with such deeds you
will cross over the limits (of material existence).
10
Eji Ginan vichaari saacha thai chaalo
To amar bhom amraapuri maalo

O Brother Having reflected upon the 'ginans' conduct yourselves truthfully.
Then you will experience the immortal abode of paradise.

The following excerpt from Supplications of Amir al-mu'minin, Hazrat NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) will form a pillar for this project (Source: KHUTBA-81: A lesson about how to pray for His forgiveness, p. 46 Nahjul-Balagha). Please take a moment to read this supplication everyday in order to gain maximum benefit:

  1. Lord! Forgive my sins which Thou know better than I.
  2. Lord! If I repeat these sins please let Thy forgiveness cover them again.
  3. Lord! I have always promised myself to obey Thy commands and have always broken these promises. Forgive this weakness of mine.
  4. Lord! I have always declared that I shall come near Thee but my mind (has) opposed this, forgive this fault of my mind.
  5. Lord! Forgive the sins committed by my eyes. Forgive my vicious and sinful utterances, and forgive my inability to resist temptations. (Ameen)

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu 'alayhi wa-sallam) gave guidance to Muslims and the humanity for material, spiritual and intellectual upliftment. The rewards of glorifying, praising, declaring Allah's unity and His greatness are among the fundamental concepts of Islam. Therefore, let us put this advice into practice by performing the zikr of Allahu Akbar, Subhan Allah, Al-hamdu Lillah, La ilaha illa-llah (Allah is Great, Glory be to Allah, Praise be to Allah, There is no god but Allah). Real Audio sound tracks are provided for your convenience.

The 12th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Tuesday evening, October 26, 2004.

The first five verses of Surah Al-Aalaa4 (The Most High) show the power and function of this Divine attribute of Allah, Al-Aalaa. I have reproduced these below:

Transliteration
English Translation
Sabbihisma Rabbikal-'A-laa; Praise the name of thy Lord the Most High, (87:1)
Allazii khalaqa fasawwa; Who creates, then disposes; (87:2)
Waallazii qaddara fahadaa; Who measures, then guides; (87:3)
Waallazii 'akhrajal-mar-'aa, Who brings forth the pasturage, (87:4)
Fa-ja-'alahuu gusaaa-an 'ahwaa. Then turns it to russet stubble. (87:5)

The tawil (inner meaning) of these five verses of Surah Al-Aala (The Most High) has been presented by Pis Shams in his ginan, Haq tu(n) Paak tu(n):

Hak tu(n) paak tu(n) baadshah
Maherbaan bhi Ali tu(n)hi tu(n)

You are the eternal truth, and You are the holiest divine being.
To You belong the dominion of the heavens and the earth.
Most gracious also are You,
O Ali, You and none else but You.
1
Rab tu(n) Rahemaan tu(n)
Ali awwal aakhar kaazi tu(n)hi tu(n)

You are the sustainer of all beings, and most merciful are You.
The beginning of all things is from You,
and the end of everything is unto You.
O Ali, You and none else but You.

The 13th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Wednesday evening, October 27, 2004. On this aupicious night, let us supplicate with a couple of verses of ginan, read an excerpt from supplications of Amir al-mu'minin, Hazrat NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) and then perform zikr for forgiveness of our sins by reciting tasbis derived from 99 Names of Allah.

Allah teaches us about our origin through the following Qur'anic Ayat "'Innaa lillaahi wa- 'innaaa 'ilayhi raaji-'uunn" (Lo! we are Allah's and lo! unto Him we are returning) (Surah 2, Ayat 156). This verse also affirms that we are Allah's creations and to Him is our return as described by Hazrat Ali:

Hazrat heard somebody repeating the passage of the Holy Quran "We belong to God and our return is towards Him", Hazrat said, "How true it is. Our saying that we belong to God indicates we accept Him as our Master, Owner and Lord. And when we say our return is towards God indicates that we accept our mortality."

In the following verse from Moti Venti, Pir Hasan Kabirdin teaches us about the origin of our souls:

Eji Âdam âd niri(n)jan
nargun âpê arup
asal amârâ sâmi tamê
judâ padiyâ thai rup
mahêr karo morâ sâ(n)hiyâ
abarâ sharan tamâri â

0 Lord, In the beginning, You were Unseen (Niranjan),
Attributeless (Nargun) and Formless (Arup).
0 Master, from Thee alone is my origin.
By taking a physical form, I have been separated from Thee.
Have mercy on me, my Lord.
I am helpless and dependent on you.

One of the benefits of the zikr of tasbis derived from Divine names is the pardon of sins. Therefore, let us use a bouquet of Ya Haakim, Ya Wakil, Ya Fattah, Ya Salaam (O Wise, O Trustee, O Decider, O the Source of Peace) for spiritual upliftment. Subject: Posting 14: Holy Ramadan - Holy Ginan Project

The 14th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Thursday evening, October 28, 2004.

Please reflect on some of the characteristics of a real believer, according to Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi of Imam Mustansir bi'l-laah II (from page 5 of the text (Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi translated by W. Ivanow, The Ismaili Society Series A No. 6):

"The (real) believer is one who sees his own sins, fears them, and repents for them. (Page 5)

The (real) believer is one who realizes his own position and state, who does not forget these, who does not forget about the agonies of death and the bitterness of the moment when the soul shall part with the body, who is afraid of the tortures of the future, and of the answers to be given to the questions of Munkar and Nakir. (Page 5)

The (real) believer is one who always feels that the All-Forgiving Lord is present before him and sees him, that He is just there, nearer to him than his own self. (page 5) "

In the following verse from Moti Venti, Pir Hasan Kabirdin teaches us to supplicate to Mowla (do venti or giriyauzari) and seek forgiveness:

Eji chhêdo nâ(n)khinê sâmi dhâ(n)kajo
avgun am tanâ âya
amê to abarâ âdhin chhu(n)
lajâ tamâri ho râya
mahêr karo morâ sâ(n)hiyâ
abarâ sharan tamâri

0 Lord, Put a veil over my wrongs,
And conceal my numerous faults and failures.
I am sinful and weak.
My honour, 0 Lord is due to you.
Have mercy on me, my Lord.
I am helpless and dependent on you.

The 15th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Friday evening, October 29, 2004.

In Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi, Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Mustansir bi'l-laah II (a.s.) teaches us about the status and function of Pirs (Source: page 40 of the text Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi translated by W. Ivanow, The Ismaili Society Series A No. 6):

"Therefore, accept wholeheartedly (ba-jan) whatever the spiritual guide (murshid) teaches you, when he gives his advice, religious instruction and admonition; this will bring you in truth and righteousness to the Truth (haqiqat) and to the recognition the Imam of the time (Imam-i hadir). You must be thankful for this, because it is valuable for the traveller on his road to have a guide, a candle and a light, so that he may ultimately reach his home safely and without suffering." (page 40)

In the following verse from Moti Venti, Pir Hasan Kabirdin teaches us to supplicate to Mowla (do venti or giriyauzari) and beg for mercy, spiritual union and his recognition:

0 Lord, How long shall I remain alone?
Everyday is passed in a state of being spiritually unwed (dohag).
I beseech you, my Master, make me your (spiritual) bride (sohag) and banish my loneliness.
Protect my honour, 0 Master of fourteen universes.
Have mercy on me, my Lord.
I am helpless and dependent on you.

Subject: Posting 16: Holy Ramadan - Holy Ginan Project

The 16th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Saturday evening, October 30, 2004. On this aupicious night, let us supplicate with a couple of verses of ginan, read an excerpt from supplications of Amir al-mu'minin, Hazrat NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) and then perform zikr for forgiveness of our sins by reciting the Astaghafirullahi Rabbi Wa Atubu Ilayhi tasbi.

In Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi, Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Mustansir bi'l-laah II (a.s.) teaches us about the recognition of the Light of the Imam (Source: page 38 of the text Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi translated by W. Ivanow, The Ismaili Society Series A No. 6):

" ...and if he purifies his moral self, whenever he discovers in himself the properties of brutes and beasts, he then acquires human properties, and purifies himself. And when his heart has become pure, and doubt and dishonesty leave his mind, when, he acquires certainty in the recognition of the Imam of his time, seeing him as everywhere present before him, looking upon him, he then reaches the stage of self evident certainty ('ilmu'l-yakin), and attains the stage of absolute truth (haqqu'l-yaqin) when his heart becomes enlightened by the absolute light and in that light he begins to see his soul (jan). Thereafter he begins to see with absolute self-evidence the place in which his Creator is." (page 38)

In the following verse from Moti Venti, Pir Hasan Kabirdin teaches us that there are millions of purified souls in paradise. Therefore, it will be a great challenge for us to be deserving to be present in that congregation. The Holy Pir is teaching us to supplicate to Mowla for forgiveness of our sins and beg for mercy, and become more deserving to be in his Holy Presence.

Eji sâmiji nâriyu(n) tâmâri ati ghâni

tamê chho alak niri(n)jan
amê chhiê dhuri khâk
mahêr karo morâ sâ(n)hiyâ
abarâ sharan tamâri
0 Lord, Your (spiritual) maidens are innumerable.
There are hundred of thousands like me.
You are the Unknowable (Alakh), the Unseen (Niranjan)
While we are as insignificant as dust.
Have mercy on me, my Lord.
I am helpless and dependent on you.

(Ameen)

Repentance is the mechanism to return to our Creator therefore it is appropriate to use the tasbi "Astaghafirullahi Rabbi Wa Atubu Ilayhi (Verily, I seek the forgiveness of Allah, who is my Lord and Sustainer, and I turn to Him in repentance)" to implement this Divine command. Therefore, let us use a bouquet of Astaghafirullahi Rabbi Wa Atubu Ilayhi tasbi to clear the path of our return journey to our Creator. Real Audio sound tracks are available for your convenience.

The 17th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Sunday evening, October 31, 2004.

In the path of spiritual development, it is necessary to submit only to Mushid-i-Kamil, Imam-e-Zaman. NOOR Mowlana Hazrat Ali (a.s.) has also articulated the path that we should take to get clear guidance (Nahjul Balagha: Sermons, letters and saying of Hazrat Ali, Sayings of Hazrat Ali 134, 288):

"Where are you going and whom are you following? The truth (Islam) has fixed its landmarks, has lighted its beacons and has set up direction indicators, inspite of all this you are being misled and confused. But why should you be perplexed when you have Ahlay Baith (decendants) of the Holy Prophet (a.s.) amongst you. They will direct you towards truth and religion, guide you towards the path of God, they will speak to you in the language of truth. Love and respect them as you love and respect the Holy Quran. To satisfy your thirst for realities of life turn to them as thirsty animals gather around watering places."

In the following verse from Moti Venti, Pir Hasan Kabirdin teaches us to supplicate to Mowla and implore him to overlook our shortcomings and keep us on the Right path.

Eji châli châli hu(n) thâki rahi

0 Lord, I have been weary of wandering around
and I cannot go any further.
Overlook my shortcomings, O Lord,
for I cannot subsist without you.
Have mercy on me, my Lord.
I am helpless and dependent on you.

"O, believers, O, sincere ones! Smile only then when you are saved from the calamities and perils, when you are out of the whirlpool and on dry land, when you are safely back from the journey. It means, then, that joy will be attained when you arrive at the recognition of the Imam of the time, becoming his faithful and obedient slaves, and not being even for a moment disobedient or forgetful of him. You will then become enlightened by his recognition,–and it is this time which will be appropriate for joy and merriment." (page 31)

In the following verse from Moti Venti, Pir Hasan Kabirdin teaches us to supplicate to Mowla and implore him to overlook our shortcomings and keep us on the Right path.

Subject: Posting 19: Holy Ramadan - Holy Ginan Project

The 19th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Tuesday evening, November 2, 2004. On this aupicious night, let us supplicate with a couple of verses of ginan, read an excerpt from supplications of Amir al-mu'minin, Hazrat NOOR Mowlana Murtaza Ali (a.s.) and then perform zikr for forgiveness of our sins by reciting the Holy Salwat.

Please reflect on the importance of Divine remembrance, according to Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi of Imam Mustansir bi'l-laah II (from pages 2-6 of the text (Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi by W. Ivanow, The Ismaili Society Series A No. 6):

"The (real) believer is one who is a man (Jawaannard), i.e., he who throughout the whole year of twelve months acts properly and piously, continuously remembering the Truth (Haqq). He must speak the truth, listen to the truth, must abide in truth and walk in truth. His heart must be clean, and his thoughts sincere, he must remain clean. (Page 2)

The (real) believer is one who continually remembers God (Haqq), and whose tongue does not utter anything without mention of God. (Page 6) "

In the following verse from Moti Venti, Pir Hasan Kabirdin teaches us that all the sins are forgiven when the remembrance of the Lord becomes continuous within the person's whole being. This means the soul reaches its ultimate purity when a person reaches the stage of constant, automatic remembrance (ajampiya jamp) of the Lord. This is an incredible definition of forgiveness of sins from the treasury of the Holy Ginans.

then all my sins will vanish.

The 20th night of the Holy Ramadan starts on Wednesday evening, November 3, 2004.

In Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi, Imam NOOR Mowlana Shah Mustansir bi'l-laah II (a.s.) teaches us about light and eternal existence (Source: Excerpts from pages 62-63 of the text Pandiyat-i Jawanmardi translated by W. Ivanow, The Ismaili Society Series A No. 6):

"Whoever treats himself as something (important) in this world, being sure of his own (important) existence, will become non-existent (non-entity); will be deprived of a share of existence. Man (by himself) is neither extant nor non-existent, neither light or darkness. If the Imam, who possesses association (with God, walayat), helps him, he becomes endowed with being and light. But if he does not recognize (the Imam) from a (false) sense of security, and does not swear allegiance to the Imam of the time, he will become non-existent and dark."

The Holy Imam elevates his followers by blessing them with Ism-i Azam. The remembrance of this great name leads to enlightenment. In the following verse from Moti Venti, Pir Hasan Kabirdin teaches us the Great Name (Ism-i Azam) of the Lord is the key to overcome the tribulations on the road to the Eternal. The Pir also says that the Lord has innumerable names and each name has its own luminosity, power, blessing and mystery.

Eji sâmi ati dukh chhê saragni vatmâ(n)

which will vanish with Your (sacred) name (ism-e azam).
